“Fairly within the realm of romance were my two days travel on foot, when I was twelve years old, through a pristine wilderness to a beautiful lake hidden in the forest about twenty miles east of Marquette..It was there, as a youthful hunter, I shot my first deer.”

George Shiras’ seminal Midnight Series was birthed of the soot black ground they portray. At the time, wildlife photography barely existed. With trip-wires, Shiras contrived devices that capture the heart of the feral. Shot with the empathetic impulse of a naturalist, his images equally expose the dread of the unknown and awe of the serene.
